Paterson Guide

Employment

The largest employers are St. Joseph's Reg. Medical Center, the City of Paterson, William Paterson University, Marcal Paper Products, Accurate Box, Frost King–Thermwell Products, and Barnert Hospital. Additionally, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Paterson as small businesses continue to provide the backbone for the City’s continued revitalization.

A shrinking manufacturing base due to overseas competition has created a larger than average unemployment rate among low-skilled workers. However, several textiles and transportation equipment companies, as well, as a large garment industry, still exists in Paterson. Among the many other manufactures found are electronic equipment, paper and food products, fabricated metals, rubber, and plastics.

Three particular industry sectors are expected to account for approximately three quarters of the projected growth in Paterson through the year 2012. They are education and health services, professional and business services, and retail trade.
